The future of aerospace relies on sustainable and durable solutions that pass mission-critical tests and meet the highest quality standards. In today’s article, we’ll discuss the role of 3M™ tapes, their uses, and how these tapes drive efficiency in aerospace and aviation manufacturing processes.
How Do 3M™ Tapes Support Aerospace and Aviation?
Known for their environmental resistance and superior durability, 3M™ tapes are used heavily in mission-critical aerospace and aviation operations and MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul.) 3M™ tapes have a variety of functions in aerospace applications, including:
- EMI/RFI shielding
- Protecting aircraft components
- Electrical insulation
- Thermal protection
- General protection of hoses, wires, and cables
- Surface protection
- Sealing and bonding
- Anti-vibration
Next, we’ll cover the types of tapes and their specific roles in protecting aircraft equipment from potentially catastrophic events, such as impact, erosion, radiation, and electromagnetic interference.
Types of 3M™ Tapes Used in Aerospace
There are many different types of 3M™ aerospace tapes used in manufacturing depending on the solution needed. Below are a few of them.
1. Protective Polyurethane or Surface Protection Tapes
Polyurethane protective tapes can protect aircraft from surface damage, such as erosion, abrasion, impact, and punctures, due to their strength. They’re commonly used on wing tips, leading edges, and areas where the aircraft is exposed to the elements and susceptible to wear and tear.
An example of these tapes includes the 3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tape 8544 and 3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tape 8664HS.
2. Aluminum Foil Tapes for Thermal Management
Aluminum foil tape, also known as speed tape, is used for thermal insulation, heat reflection, and sealing in high-temperature environments. They’re often used in areas such as engine compartments and ducts. The speed tape’s thickness helps it stay connected to the aircraft while in flight.
3M™ Aluminum Foil Tape 425 is a chemical-resistant tape that works to protect temperature-sensitive materials by dissipating heat.
3. Electrically Conductive Tapes
Electrically conductive tapes are used in magnetic shielding and grounding applications in avionics and other electronic components that are sensitive to signals caused by EMI/RFI. These tapes help minimize electromagnetic interference and maintain signal integrity. An example of tape used for EMI shielding is the 3M™ Electrically Conductive Single-Sided Tape 5113SFT.
4. Flame-Retardant Tapes
Flame-retardant tapes provide critical protection in areas that are required to meet fire and safety standards, such as cargo bays and aircraft interiors. These flame-resistant tapes are used for wrapping, sealing, and insulation. These space tapes provide critical protection in areas that need to meet strict fire safety standards, such as aircraft interiors and cargo bays.
5. VHB™ (Very High Bond) Tapes
VHB tapes offer strong and durable bonding solutions that are designed to replace mechanical fasteners, such as screws and rivets. Tapes like 3M™ VHB™ Tape 5952 are ideal for bonding panels, stiffeners, and other structural components.
8. Glass Cloth Tapes
Glass cloth tapes are often used in high-temperature applications where thermal and electrical insulation are needed. These flame-resistant tapes are used in aircraft engine compartments and hot components. An example of this tape includes the 3M™ Glass Cloth Electrical Tape 69.
9. Sealing Tapes
This type of space tape seals aircraft components and structures to protect against moisture, chemicals, and high temperatures. Sealing tapes are often found in cargo bays, doors, and windows.
10. Anti-Vibration Tapes
Sound and vibration damping tapes are applied to reduce interior aircraft vibration and noise, such as around seats and window shades. These tapes help improve passenger comfort by dampening sound and movement.
7. EMI/RFI Shielding Tapes
There are many different types of EMI/RFI shielding tapes used in aerospace and avionics to protect critical aircraft electronics from electromagnetic interference. They ensure optimal performance of the electrical systems in the aircraft. An example of this tape includes the 3M™ EMI Shielding Tape 1181 (copper foil).
